The other Crowleys of Friars Walk
Lots of Daniel Stephens and Mary nee Mehigans brothers and sisters lived in the Ballyphehane & Togher area (see the Friars Walk map for the exact locations). Daniel Stephens's brother Jeremiah was a direct neighbour. It seems though that these two brothers did not get on but that there was no animosity whatsoever between the rest of the two families. His daughter 'cousin Kate' is fondly remembered. Jim was popular name. I believe that James (1844) had at least three grandchildren with that name! There was my grandfather, big Jim and Knowledge (Jim) Crowley. Two or three of Daniel Stephens's brothers lived in Ballyphane and a sister lived in Togher. Seemingly there was also at least one other 'unrelated' Crowley family in the area who had a son called Patrick who worked as a printer in Cork.
Jeremiahs family lived at the Passage (a lane that also no longer exists). Florence lived at Hangdog Road (which either does not exist or was renamed Tramore Road). Sister Minnie married Patchan O'Sullivan and lived in Togher. Christy lived on Pouladuff Road. Daniel Stephen also lived on Pouladuff Road before he married Mary nee Mehigan. But if that was in the same house I do not know.
The information that we have on Daniel Stephens brothers and sisters
and their offspring has been included in the new 'first
four generations' family tree. It is incomplete but with time that
may also improve. If you think you are related please do not hesitate
to contact me. I'd very much like to hear from you.
There are also portraits of Daniel Stephan & Mary available written by their daughter May.
In the summer of 2003 while in Ireland I tried to obtain Daniel Stephan's birth certificate. I received one where all the details were right except Daniel Stephens name, which was recorded as James. I phoned to enquire about the mistake, only to be told after a subsequent search that no entry, corresponding with the particulars given in your recent application, was found in that period. This would mean that Daniel Stephen was registered as James his fathers name. This was seemingly not that unusual at the time and as he did not have any brothers called James, there is no real problem. Daniel Stephan baptised his children Una as Hanna and Peadar and Paul were to have other names as well. Next
